August 11, 2009 - A group that advocates for veterans blinded by improvised explosive devices and other weapons will meet in Portland next week.  The Blinded Veterans Association's annual convention takes place from Aug. 17 through Aug. 22. The group aims to help blinded veterans re-enter civilian life, cope with physical and emotional stress from losing their sight and find post-duty jobs.

Combat in Afghanistan and Iraq has created more injuries resulting in eye trauma than any conflict since the Civil War, according to the group. The Department of Defense estimates that 14 percent of all wounded soldiers evacuated from Afghanistan and Iraq have experienced serious eye trauma.

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a veteran, Sen. Ron Wyden and U.S Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki will speak at the event. About 140 veterans are expected to attend.

The event takes place at the Doubletree Hotel in Northeast Portland.
