August 12, 2009, Waco, TX - More than 200 jobs will be created at the Waco VA Hospital as part of a new National call center announced Wednesday in Waco.
U.S. Representative Chet Edwards along with Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki were in Waco to make the announcement about the creation of a National Pharmacy Contact Center. The center will employ 224 full and part time call takers who will provide information and answers to questions about medications from individual veterans and one-third of the VA's pharmacies. "The new center will be there to answer questions from veterans about their prescriptions, and work with VA facilities so that VA practitioners can address critical issues promptly and safely," Shinseki said. The move to create the call center was made as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs initiative to improve customer service and enhance access to care at VA medical centers. "Not only will adding a national call center at the Waco VA create local 224 new jobs in tough economic times," Edwards said, "The men and women who are employed will know they are giving something back to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for our nation." Building 90 on the Waco VA campus will be renovated to house the call center under a $4.5 million contract beginning in September. Edwards continued, "The National Pharmacy Contact Center brings us one step closer to realizing the dream of those of us who fought so hard to keep the Waco VA open-the dream that this campus one day be fully utilized for the benefit of America's veterans. "By selecting Waco", Edwards said, "the VA takes advantage of an existing VA facility and a community that has proven for over 70 years its commitment to caring for veterans." The Waco VA also received $7.9 Million in projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
