August 17, 2009 - Sen. Arlen Specter and Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki were to speak with veterans at a morning forum at Drexel University.

The intended focus was veteran's issues, including benefits, health care and the new Post 9/11 GI Bill.

Later this morning, Specter's opponent in the May 2010 primary will also talk health care with veterans. US Rep. Joe Sestak, D-Pa., will host a veterans' forum at the Philadelphia Veterans' Multi-Service and Education Center.

Bound to come up before Specter and Shinseki: the unfolding scandal involving a Philadelphia prostate-cancer program. Ninety-two patients were notified that their radiation doses were too high or too low.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs shut down the brachytherapy program in Philadelphia, as well as at three other VA hospitals with less serious problems.

The Democratic senator held a hearing on the matter here in June.

Today's 8:45 event should less contentious than the senator's recent town hall meetings, where some members of the public have angrily denounced federal health-care proposals.

Yesterday on ABC's This Week, Specter said that the anger witnessed at town hall meetings about federal health-care idea don't reflect the view of most Americans.

Utah GOP Sen. Orrin Hatch countered on the program that the Democratic National Committee and organized labor were sending their own supporters to town halls to challenge Republicans.

The forums are part of a White House-led effort to draw attention to health care reform. Later today, President Barack Obama will address veterans in Phoenix, Ariz.
